Practical Information

Weather in Tianjin: Located in a subtropical zone, Tianjin features a four-season, monsoon-influenced climate, typical of East Asia, with cold, windy, very dry winters reflecting the influence of the vast Siberian anticyclone, and hot, humid summers, due to the monsoon. At the beginning of September temperature oscillate between 26-30º Celsius during day time and 16-22º Celsius at night. The humidity is high due to its location at the coast. We recommend wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt or shirt and jeans in cool mornings and evenings. In sunny days, you may wear a dress or shorts in afternoons. Please bring a lightweight jacket in case of bad weather.

Time Zone: China is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time of UTC+08:00.

Dress Code: Business attire is the official dress code during the workshop. Dress code for evening social functions, unless otherwise specified within the programme, is smart casual attire. It is also recommended for delegates to bring along light clothes.

Official Language: Mandarin is the official language of China. English is widely spoken among young people.

Electricity: The voltage in China is 220V; 50Hz. Standard sockets in China have 2 pins or 3 pins. Below are two standard sockets used in China:

Mobile phones: The country code for China is 86. There are two ways to use your mobile in China:

  • (1) If you wish to use your own phone number from home, you should make sure that the "international roaming service" has been turned on by your domestic provider which must have the right to access a network in China before coming to China. If your domestic operator has not entered into an agreement on international roaming services with the local operator in Tianjin, the international roaming service will be unavailable to your domestic phone number.
  • (2) Visitors entering China can buy SIM phone cards and pre-paid phone cards in Tianjin to enjoy all the services provided by local mobile phone operators. You may take your passport with you and purchase SIM cards at service locations of local operators. Currently, Tianjin has three mobile phone service operators: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.

For more information, please call the customer services of local operators at +86 1010086 (China Mobile), +86 1010010 (China Unicom) and +86 1010000 (China Telecom).

Internet Access: Internet access services are quite common in Tianjin. Wired Internet access is available at hotels, business centers and internet bars. Laptop users can access wireless networks at many coffee shops and restaurants. Internet access is also available in most hotels ranked three-stars or above. For fees and guidelines, please contact hotel personnel when you check-in.

Local Currency and exchange rate: Renminbi (RMB) is the official currency of China and you will offen find also the acrononym CNY which means Yuan and is exactly the same. Current exchange rates of RMB are as follows (for reference only): USD 1 = RMB 6.5853    EUR 1 = RMB 7.1101

Local Transport Information Bus and Subway Tianjin benefits from an extensive network of bus lines and an ever growing system of network of subway lines. As for its complexity and often lack of English signing we recommend moving in taxi around the city. Tianjin Taxi: There are mainly two types of taxies in Tianjin and the fares depend on the type of vehicle. For the common taxies, the fare rate is RMB 8 for the first three kilometers and then RMB 1.7 for each additional kilometer. And for other taxies, the staring price is RMB 8 for the first two kilometers and then RMB 2 per km is added hereafter. In addition, another 50% return charge is also factored into the total fare when it is more than 10 kilometers. There are about 32,000 taxies in Tianjin.

So it is very convenient to take a taxi at airport, railway station, hotel, and tourist attractions no matter the time of the day or night.
