International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 kicks off
Nearly 600 participants attended yesterday the Official Launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017. The event took place in the International Tourism Fair of Spain, FITUR, and will be followed by 12 months of global actions aimed at advancing sustainable tourism contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The World Tourism Organization begins the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain presided over the event celebrating the launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The gathering was attended by ministers of tourism from around the world. The celebration highlighted tourism’s enormous potential to contribute to the development of all countries within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, and the need to continue advancing towards a more sustainable sector that generates benefits to local communities and promotes the conservation of cultural values and natural heritage.

FITUR 2017: UNWTO with a focus on sustainability and tourism in Africa and in the MENA region
The International Tourism Fair in Spain (FITUR), taking place on January 18-22 in Madrid, comprises a number of events organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Activities will have a special focus on sustainable tourism, including the official presentation of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 on January 18.

The Year Ahead: harnessing the power of tourism to build a better world
Dear friends, I write to you as I begin my final year as UNWTO Secretary-General, a position I have been privileged to hold for almost seven years at an Agency I have been proud to serve for the past decade. During this time I have seen tourism become one of the world’s most important and impactful socio-economic sectors of our times. I have seen its growing relevance to the lives of millions around the world, to the preservation of our common values and to greater understanding among people of all walks of life.

Urban planning and city tourism need to go “hand in hand”, concludes UNWTO Summit
The 5th UNWTO City Tourism Summit in Luxor, Egypt gathered around 400 experts from 40 countries to discuss the theme ‘Cities: Local culture for a global traveler’. The event, organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Tourism of Egypt, concluded on the importance of ensuring urban planning and city tourism development are fully coordinated. Authenticity, local culture, the engagement of local communities and the use of technology were pointed out as key success factors for city tourism.

UNWTO Workshop addresses quality in product development in tourism destinations
During two days, 15-17 September 2016, experts from the private and public sectors have discussed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the relevance of quality in product development in tourism destinations. The workshop is the result of the commitment reached through the Memorandum of Understanding undersigned between UNWTO and the Government of Ethiopia in 2014 aimed at developing the tourism sector in the country.

Sport and adventure offer opportunities for snow and mountain tourism
Over two days, snow and mountain tourism professionals held discussions on the theme “Sport and Adventure: A Promising Combination for Mountain Destinations”, analysing the prospects for the development of this segment. The 9th edition of the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism, entitled “Mountainlikers”, took place in Andorra and was organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Government of the Principality of Andorra in collaboration with the municipality of Sant Julià de Lòria.
